For many, the holiday is a fun start to the summer. But for others it’s a bittersweet day that can bring up painful, complex emotions. For me, the holiday has been bittersweet since my dad passed away a few years ago. But what my family has done since is to get together for a meal to celebrate the day as a way to honor and remember my dad. I’ve found it helpful with grief to create little traditions and take opportunities to celebrate, even though he’s no longer here.
I was wondering how Father’s Day came about since it generally doesn’t get as much attention as Mother’s Day. I learned that the first documented Father’s Day in the US was in 1908, the same year as Mother’s Day. However, it didn’t become a national holiday until 1972 whereas Mother’s Day became one in 1914. One reason it took more than a half-century to gain traction? One historian in this article on the history of Father’s Day said that men in the early 20th century “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving.”
Luckily, I don’t think many share that sentiment today. I don’t know if people still buy their dads ties or socks (that seemed to be the go-to gift in the 80s and 90s), but a recent survey listed the top 3 things that fathers want most is quality time with their family, a special dinner, and a thoughtful card.
